An encoder prepares the signal by compressing it into a streaming format. The stream is then sent to a dedicated radio server with plenty of bandwidth.

SHOUTcast uses MP3 or AAC encoding of audio content and HTTP (though multicast can be used) as the transport protocol to broadcast web radio, also known as Internet radio. Clients are available for Windows, FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris.
